Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) has announced a financial package to regional football associations to support their activities due to challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The EFF Executive Committee took the decision at their meeting on Thursday.

According to the EFF, it has allocated 2.8 million Birr ($83,000) for distribution to the regional associations to support their organizational activities.

Tigray, Amhara, SNNP, Oromia, Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa regional associations will get 300,000 Birr ($ 8,800) whilst Gambella, Afar, Benshal Gul, Harari and Ethio-Somali regions will receive 200,000 Birr ($5,800) each.

Apart from the financial package to members, the EFF also discussed the 2020/21 season and has constituted a committee in that regard.

In other news, EFF instructed football clubs that they have until set July 12, 2020 to settle accounts with their players whom they haven’t been paid for the past 3-4 months. Those who fail to do so, will not be permitted to sell their players or sign new ones for the upcoming new season, the EFF noted.

Meanwhile, the EFF has appointed Bahiru Tilahun as the new Secretary-General of the federation replacing Dr Iyassu Merha-Tsadik and Tewodros Franco will take the place of Dr. Tedla Dagnachew, who was recently named director of the Confederation Africaine de Football (CAF) Soccer Academy.

The African Development Bank’s Board of Directors has approved a $1.2 million grant to Ethiopia’s government to finance a feasibility study into a standard-gauge railway (SGR) link between Ethiopia and neighboring Sudan.

This grant from the African Development Fund, the Group’s concessional-rate lending arm, covers 35% of the total cost of the study, estimated at $3.4 million. The remaining funding will be provided by the NEPAD Infrastructure Project Preparation Facility (NEPAD-IPPF) in the form of a $2-million grant, and by a contribution of $100,000 each from the two countries involved. The financing was approved in January.

The two-year comprehensive feasibility study into the rail project between Ethiopia and Sudan will assess its technical, economic, environmental and social viability, and alternative financing arrangements, including a public-private partnership (PPP).

The railway line will link Addis Ababa in Ethiopia to Khartoum in Sudan, with an extension to Port Sudan on the Red Sea. The route, agreed by both governments, stretches some 1,522 kilometres from Addis Ababa to Port Sudan.

According to the document presented to directors of the African Development Fund, the absence of a regional arterial route linking Ethiopia, Sudan and other countries in the Horn of Africa is a brake on trade, development and regional integration. The movement of goods and people between Sudan and Ethiopia often requires the use of several modes of transport, which increases costs and lengthens journey times.

African Development Bank Group The findings of the project feasibility study will be keenly awaited because its implementation will affect a large proportion of the 110 million people living in Ethiopia and the 43 million inhabitants of Sudan, as well as those further afield, as this route will be connected to the Horn of Africa transport network.

The proposed study is aligned with the Bank’s Country Strategy Paper 2016-2020 for Ethiopia, which is informed by the country’s Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP-II) and the priorities of the upcoming Ten Year Perspective Plan 2021-2030. It is also consistent with the long-term development goals of the Sudanese Government, described in its national 25-year strategy (2007-2031). It also fully accords with the Bank’s Ten-Year Strategy 2013-2022 and the operational priority of infrastructure development. Four of the Bank’s High 5 strategic priorities are addressed by this project: Integrate Africa, Feed Africa, Industrialize Africa, and Improve the Quality of Life for the People of Africa.

Degitu Azmeraw wins the Amsterdam Marathon (Organisers)

Ethiopia’s Degitu Azmeraw smashed the women’s course record at the TCS Amsterdam Marathon with 2:19:26, the second-fastest debut in history for the distance, while Kenya’s Vincent Kipchumba won a close men’s contest in 2:05:09 at the IAAF Gold Label road race today.

On a morning with perfect windless conditions and temperatures between 10-12C, the pace in the women’s race was swift from the outset. Azmeraw was one of six athletes in the lead pack and passed through 5km in 16:26 and 10km in 32:49. The six women were still together through the half-way point, reached in 1:10:00 exactly, and 30km, covered in 1:39:40.

It was only after then that the real racing began and the group was whittled down to five at 35km (1:56:14) with Azmeraw, Tigist Girma, Azmera Gebru, Besu Sado and Mimi Belete still in contention.

The quintet eventually dispersed over the final few kilometres with Azmeraw – who had clocked 1:06:07 for the half marathon this year – forging ahead to win in 2:19:26, taking almost two minutes from Meseret Hailu Debele’s 2:21:09 course record set in 2012. Former world record-holder Paula Radcliffe is the only woman to record a faster marathon debut, having clocked 2:18:56 in 2002.

“I wanted to see what it was like to run a marathon,” said Azmeraw. “I was expecting a time of about 2:20 so this result is definitely a success.”

Girma was second in 2:19:52, taking almost seven minutes off the PB she set when winning in Ottawa earlier this year. Gebru finished third, replicating her position from last year, but was rewarded with a PB of 2:20:48, while Sado – a former 1500 m specialist making her marathon debut – was fourth in 2:21:03, also inside the previous course record.

Sirak Seyoum, an electrical engineer living in San Francisco, has taken months off his professional position at Cargill Corp., to be the first Ethiopian to conquer Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world. Sirak discovered his passion for climbing more than 11 years ago and has since been climbing actively countless mountain ranges around the world nonstop.

As a young boy, Sirak grew up in Gondar idolizing sports legends like Pele and Abebe Bikila, who continued to inspire his love for the outdoors and engage in college sports while excelling academically at Michigan Tech University (MTU), where he travelled to with his parents, both PhD holders.

His father, Dr. Seyoum Tatichef passed away in 2011, proud and supportive of his son’s mountain climbing ambitions. While a little anxious, his mother Dr. Fantaye Mekbeb is also Sirak’s number one fan, thankful to see her son’s passion coming to fruition in 2019. She is confident in his ability to reason and his mental/physical strengths, as are all his friends.

Sirak’s conquest of some of the most challenging mountains around the world is testament to his level of fitness that is beyond compare. As if climbing mountains is not challenging enough, Sirak is known to wear weighted vests to “enhance” his experience.

You can visit his Facebook page to find out more about him and please support Sirak’s efforts to become the first Ethiopian to climb Mount Everest by visiting his GoFundMe page and making donations.

Ethiopian Airlines Group, Africa’s Largest Airline Group and SKYTRAX Certified Four Star Global Airline, is pleased and extends its congratulations to the entire Ethiopian family and the country at large, on the recognition of Mr. Tewolde GebreMariam, Group CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, as one of the most influential people of African descent in the category of business and entrepreneurship at a colourful ceremony held in Addis Ababa on Feb. 09,  2019.

The Most Influential People of African Descent (MIPAD) is a global civil society initiative in support of the United Nation’s International Decade for People of African Descent, recognizing high achievers in four categories namely Politics and Governance, Business and Entrepreneurship, Media & Culture and Religious and Humanitarian.

Regarding the recognition, Mr. Tewolde GebereMariam, remarked, “It is an absolute honor to have received this prestigious recognition, an accolade that highlights the contribution of high achievers to Africa. First and foremost, my recognition is a tribute to the hardworking Ethiopian employees, ardent management members , the board and the government of Ethiopia at large.  The award attests the incredibly important role Ethiopian Airlines plays in the integration of Africa through a robust business. I have always taken a great deal of pride that Ethiopian is catalyzing the much needed trade and investment, tourism, and people-to-people relations in the continent and beyond.”

“We, African business leaders, who wield an influence in Africa’s business and economic circles should promote business and entrepreneurship in collaboration with all concerned stakeholders to help ensure sustainability and development, capitalizing on one if the greatest assets of Africa, which is its young, fast-growing, and increasingly urbanized population”, Mr. Tewolde urged.

When cut-throat competition is bound to be the order of the day in the aviation industry, under his leadership, Mr. Tewolde has demonstrated an outstanding strategic thinking and direction in spearheading the strikingly exceptional growth trajectory of Ethiopian and put the airline on global aviation industry ”game changers” map, under a 15-year growth roadmap, Vision 2025, a growth plan what the rest of the world referred as “over ambitios and unattainable growth plan.”

While much has evolved in the industry, Ethiopian has stood the test of time and achieved most of its overarching goals, going halfway through its projected 15 year plan. Ethiopian is now expanding its footprint to under served global destinations and is serving global travelers with its signature Africa’s flavored Ethiopian hospitality on board and in the air. True to form, the airline has also continued pushing the frontiers of aviation technology with the 21st century new generation fleet, among others.

Joining the airline thirty-plus years ago, Mr. Tewolde has passed through the ladders to be at the helm and won a plethora of awards including African CEO of the Year, Best African Business Leader, The Airline Strategy Award for Regional Leadership, the 2015 International Grand Prix Special Award in Milan and the Most Gender Focused CEO Award 2015 by the Leading Women of Africa Group among others.

African Union Unveils Statue of Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia – Ethiosports https://addisnews.net/african-union-unveils-statue-of-emperor-haile-selassie-of-ethiopia-ethiosports/ https://addisnews.net/african-union-unveils-statue-of-emperor-haile-selassie-of-ethiopia-ethiosports/#respond Mon, 11 Feb 2019 08:21:12 +0000 https://addisnews.net/?p=63311

The statue is the second to be erected inside the continental body’s offices in Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa, after one of Ghana’s first leader, Kwame Nkrumah, who championed pan-Africanism.

Several African leaders at the current African Union summit and relatives of the emperor attended the statue unveiling ceremony.

Ethiopians have cheered the statue’s erection, the first on Ethiopian soil since Haile Selassie was mysteriously killed at the age of 83 in 1975 when a military junta called the Derg overthrew the imperial dynasty that existed in Ethiopia for 3,000 years.

Emperor Haile Selassie is among the key African leaders who founded the Organization of African Unity, which became the African Union. He oversaw the maiden meeting of the continental body in 1963.

Ethiopia was never colonized and Haile Selassie is credited for helping a number of African countries to gain independence.

Grandsons’ joy

Prince Beedemariam Makonnen, a grandson of Haile Selassie, told Anadolu Agency that the royal family is filled with joy and many of its members living abroad have come to be part of the grand occasion.

“It is really beyond words, we are mightily happy,” he said. “In our view, the monument represents the fact that Emperor Haile Selassie was a cornerstone of the Organization of African Unity, which has now morphed into the AU.

“It is also a pan-African recognition of the wisdom and diplomatic skills of Emperor Haile Selassie and those who joined hands with him in forming an institution to spearhead the anti-colonial struggle.

“The erection of the statue was delayed for years due to various reasons, and we were confident that this would come when a confident leader took over Ethiopia. It happened and will be grounds for national recognition.”

Addis Ababa, January 28, 2019 –The Ethiopian Investment Commission (EIC) and Volkswagen Group have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that enables the latter to set up an automotive industry in Ethiopia.

Commissioner of Ethiopian Investment Commission, Abebe Abebayehu, and Thomas Schaefer, Head of the Volkswagen Sub-Saharan Africa Region signed the MoU in the presence of  German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Ethiopia’s Minister of Finance, Ahmed Shide.

Today’s signing ceremony sets a significant milestone for setting up a possible automotive in Ethiopia and attract more investors from Germany. Ethiopia is a priority and focus country for Germany under the G20-“Compact with Africa” initiative.

Volkswagen will focus on four key pillars: the establishment of a vehicle assembly facility, localization of automotive components, introduction of mobility concepts such as app-based car sharing and ride hailing as well as the opening of a training center.

As such, Volkswagen will work closely with the Ethiopian higher education and training institutions for skills development and capacity building of local talent.

Schaefer commented: “As one of the fastest growing economies and with the second highest population in the continent, Ethiopia is an ideal country to advance our Sub-Saharan Africa development strategy. Additionally, Volkswagen intends on tapping into existing expertise and strategic resources in Ethiopian to help to establish a thriving automotive components industry.”

Ethiopia becomes the third country in Sub-Saharan Africa to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with Volkswagen. It follows Ghana and Nigeria who both signed MoUs with Volkswagen in August 2018.

Volkswagen has been manufacturing vehicles in South Africa since 1951. In Africa, Volkswagen also has vehicle assembly operations in Algeria, Kenya and Rwanda.

During their meeting with Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed last October in Addis Ababa, senior executives of Volkswagen (VW) expressed their keen interest to invest in Ethiopia.

The Premier assured VW that the government will do everything to help VW invest in Ethiopia.

The Volkswagen Group with its headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany, is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of automobiles and commercial vehicles.

The Volkswagen Group offers a wide range of financial services, including dealer and customer financing, leasing, banking and insurance activities, and fleet management.
