Human Rights Watch urges Kenya to speak up against Ethiopia crackdown

by Markos

Human Rights senior researcher for Horn of Africa, Felix Horne , said Kenya should end its silence and speak up against Ethiopia’s crackdown on dissent. In his op-ed published on Kenya’s weekly, The East African, Felix argued the crackdown on political dissent in Ethiopia is forcing thousands of Ethiopians to flee to Kenya and instability in parts of Ethiopia could spill over to Kenya.

Over 9,000 Ethiopians, many of them women and children, have fled into Kenya’s Marsabit County over the last ten days, escaping ongoing Ethiopian military attacks. Sadly, more Ethiopians may follow as Ethiopia continues its two-and-a-half-year descent into further instability, the op-ed said. It went on to say, Ethiopia’s security forces have targeted civilians expressing critical views of the government for harassment, arrest, and in many cases, torture for many years. Countrywide, Ethiopia’s military have killed over 1,000 civilians in response to protests since late 2015.
